Maraming Amerikanong watawat ang nagwagayway sa mga kalye ng Downtown Los Angeles noong Mayo 1, 2010 kaysa noong Ikaapat ng Hulyo. Halos 60,000 na tao ang lumabas upang magdiwang ng May Day at upang tutulan ang SB1070. Lahat ng tao ay lumabas mula sa mga bata hanggang sa mga matatanda upang tumayo sa pagkakaisa kasama ng mga kapwa nila.
Ang May Day ay tinatawag ding “International Worker’s Day.” Palagi itong ipinagdiriwang tuwing A-primero ng Mayo. Bunga nito, dahil karamihan ng trabahador sa Estados Unidos ay mga imigrante, ang taunang pagdiriwang para mga manggagawa ay isinanib sa kilusan para sa imigrasyon.
Ang martsang ito ay upang tuligsain ang bagong naipasang batas sa Arizona na SB1070. Ang batas na ito ay ginagawang legal ang “racial profiling” sa Arizona. Para sa karagdagang impormasyon sa SB 1070 iklik mo ang link na ito:

Ang isyung ito ay may malaking kinalaman sa komunidad ng mga Pilipino na may limang milyon sa Estados Unidos. Halos isang milyong Pilipino ay undocumented. Ang ating mga kapatid sa Arizona ay magiging mga biktima dahil sa rasistang patakaran nito. Ang mga Pilipino ang ikatlong pinakamalaking komunidad ng mga Asyanong imigrante sa Estados Unidos.
Ang May Day 2010 ay lumikha ng kasaysayan dahil sa dami ng taong lumahok. Ang May Day ay nagbigay sa akin ng isang napakamakapangyarihang karanasan dahil masaya ako sa pagkaalam na maraming mga tao ang may parehong ideolohiya tulad sa akin. Napakaganda ng pakiramdam na tumayo kasama ng mga kapwa ko sa mukha ng pagmamalupit upang sabihin sa buong mundo na mali ang rasismo at ipakita sa kanila ang kapangyarihan ng tao. Lahat ng tao sa mundo ay lumalaban sa “Sikmura ng Halimaw,” at harinawang mahirinan ito at mangasim ang sikmura.
Nagmartsa ako kasama ng AnakBayan, SiGaw, at iba pang organisasyon ng mga Pilipino. Gusto ko ang enerhiya nila. Mayroon silang cool na cool na awit habang nagmamartsa. Ito ang awit:

Ito ang pinaka mahiwagang bagay na nangyari sa akin pagkatapos ng rally. Pumunta ako sa Grand Central Market, pero hindi ako pwedeng pumasok kasi may picket sign ako. Tinanong ko ang security guard kung bakit hindi pwedeng pumasok sa food court na may sign ng Mahal na Birhen. Sinabi niya basta hindi lang pwede. Tinanong ko sa kanya kung naniniwala siyang lumalabag siya ng Amerikanong karapatan ng kalayaan ng pananalita. Pagkatapos, sabi niya, wala siyang pakialam basta hindi lang ako pwedeng pumasok.

May Day 2010
There were more American flags flying on the streets of Downtown LA on May 1, 2010 than there has ever been on the Fourth of July. About 60,000 people came out to celebrate May Day and to protest against SB1070. Everyone came out young and old to stand in solidarity with one another.
May Day is also known as “International Worker’s Day.” It always takes place on May 1. Resulting from the fact that most workers in America are immigrants, the annual celebration for workers has merged with the immigration movement.
The year’s rally and march focused on the recent passage of SB1070 in Arizona. Basically, this piece of legislation has legalized racial profiling in the state of Arizona. For more information on SB 1070 click this link: http://www.azleg.gov/legtext/49leg/2r/bills/sb1070s.pdf
How this issue relates to the Filipino community is that out of the 5 million Filipinos in the United States about 1 million are undocumented. Our sisters and brothers in Arizona will probably get targeted because of this racist policy. We are the third largest Asian immigrant community in the United States.
May Day 2010 made history with the largest turnout that I have ever seen. It was a truly empowering experience for me to know that there are so many people out there who have similar ideals as me. It feels good to be able to stand together with my brethren in the face of oppression to let the whole world know that racism is wrong by letting them see people power. As many can attest to we’re all fighting in the belly of the beast, hopefully we give that beast some heartburn.
I was marching with AnakBayan, SiGaw, and all the other Pilipino organizations that were in that unique group. I really liked their energy. They made a really cool song to chant while marching. It goes like this:

The weirdest thing happened to me after the rally. I went to Grand Central Market to eat, but I wasn’t allowed entry because I had a picket sign. I asked the security guard why I wasn’t allowed entrance into the food court with my sign of the Virgin Mary. He told me that I just wasn’t allowed. Then I asked him if he believed that what he was asking me to do was violating my right as an American for freedom of expression. Then he told me, he didn’t care I just couldn’t go in.

“Power in Numbers Tour”

Noong Abril 22, 2010 pumunta ang “Power in Numbers Tour” sa UCLA. Itong palabas ay tungkol sa mga isyu sa Pilipinas at sa pakikibaka ng mga Pilipino sa Estados Unidos. Maraming mga magagandang palabas galing sa mga lokal na artista. Pagkatapos nitong pagtatanghal, nagpalabas ng isang bagong pelikula na may pamagat na Sounds of New Hope, tungkol kay Kiwi Illafonte sa direksiyon ni Eric Tandoc, isang alumni ng UCLA.
Ang mga co-sponsor sa pangyayari ay: AnakBayan LA, SiGAw, Habi-Arts, at BAYAN USA. Ang isyu na itinataguyod nila ay ang pag-aalis ng US military sa Pilipinas. Ginawa nila ito sa pamamagitan ng pagsulat ng mga postcard kay Representative Howard Berman tungkol sa mga inhustisya sa Pilipinas. Ang naging bunga nito ay ang ganap na pag-aalis ng US military sa Pilipinas. Sa panahon ni Pangulong Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo may 1118 pinaslang, 200 dinukot, at 1000 kaso ng labis na pagpapahirap.
Maraming mga mahuhusay na artista ang pumunta sa palabas na ito kabilang na sina: EKH, K.See, L.U.V., Peklat & Poetic S of Dobadoza, at Shining Sons. Ito ay isang gabi ng mga awit na nagbigay ng lakas ng loob at kapangyarihan para sa mga tao.
Ang Sounds of New Hope ay tungkol sa paglalakbay ni Kiwi sa Pilipinas kasama ng AnakBayan upang magsimula ng hip-hop na workshop sa Caloocan, Pilipinas. Ang pelikulang ito ay nagpakita ng kapangyarihan ng musika na pag-isahin ang mga tao mula sa iba’t ibang kultura. Gusto kong mapanood ninyo itong pelikula.

Power in Numbers Tour
On April 22, 2010 the “Power in Numbers Tour” went to UCLA. The event was about the issues in the Philippines and the continuing struggle of Filipinos in the United States. There were a lot of good shows from local artists. After the show, there was a preview of the new movie with Kiwi Illafonte, Sounds of New Hope. and was directed by Eric Tandoc, a UCLA alumni,
The co-sponsors of the event were: AnakBayan LA, SiGAw, Habi-Arts, and BAYAN USA. The issue advocated for was the removal of US presence in the Philippines. They advocated for this by writing postcards to Representative Howard Berman about the injustices in the Philippines. Resulting from this there is a demand for a complete removal of US troops. During the Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s term there were 1118 killings, 200 disappearances, and 1000 cases of torture.
There were a lot of socially conscious artists that went to the show: EKH, K.See, L.U.V., Peklat & Poetic S of Dobadoza, at Shining Sons. It was a night of verses that empowered the people.
“Sounds of New Hope” is about the journey of Kiwi to the Philippines with AnakBayan to start a hip-hop workshop in Caloocan, Philippines. This movie illustrated the strength of music to bring together people from different cultures. I recommend this movie to you.

Educating Filipinos: Problems Facing the Next Philippine President

Ang larawan galing sa Wikipinas
Tungkol sa nagtatalumpati: Si Isagani R. Cruz ay dating sekretaryo ng edukasyon sa Pilipinas noong 2001.
Ang Pilipinas ay pinakamaikling edukasyon sa mundo nang 14-15 taon. Malapit sa 15.2% ang badyet ng nasyon para sa edukasyon. Ang karamihan ng pera sa edukasyon ay pumupunta sa suweldo ng mga titser. Dahil sa ito: 55% ng mga eskuwelahan sa Pilipinas ay walang kuriyente, 84% ay walang tubig, 62% ay walang toilet, 25% ay walang kisame, at 43% ay walang mga silya.
Ang Pilipinas ay maraming ibat’ ibang sariling departamento sa edukasyon. Ang Departamento ng Kapakanang Panlipunan ay mamahala ng preschool. Ang Departamento ng Edukasyon ay mamahala ng unang grado hanggang labing-dalawang grado. Ang Departamento ng Agham at Teknolohiya ay mamahala ng agham. Itong departameto ay kumukuha ng karamihan ng pagpopondo. Ang Sentro ng Kultura ay itinalaga ng sining.
Kaya kahit na sa kaharian ng edukasyon mayroong maraming paghahati tungkol sa mamahagi ng mga rekurso.
Galing sa mga problema niyon, ang malungkot na realidad ay karamihan ng mga titulo galing sa accredited na unibersidad sa Pilipinas ay hindi tinitanggap sa ibang bansa. Pilipinong Inhinyerong titulo ay tinatanggap lang sa Pilipinas. Ang inhinyerong accreditation sa Pilipinas ay hindi tapat sa Washington Accord at sa Asian Pacific Economic Cooperation Engineer(APEC). Ang Washington Accord ay taong marunong internasiyonal na tularan para sa inhinyerong titulo na dapat apat na taon.
Dahil sa problema ito maraming Filipinong may titulo ay dumadayo sa ibang bansa. Ang mga pagpadala galing sa mga Filipino sa ibang bansa ay mahalagang bagay ng ekonomiya sa Pilipinas. Sa halip na ipokus sa panatilihin ang mga Filipinong may titulo sa bansa para ibago ang sistema; ang Pilipinas ay interesado humanap ng mas mabilis na daanan upang iluwas ng mga Filipinong may titulo para maging trabahador. Sa Pilipinas, itong sistemang ginagamit ay mas makikinabang para sa mga maaring lider sa lipunan na dumadayo malayo sa sariling bayan.
Ang UN ay imungkahi isang programa upang subukan pabutihin ang edukasyon sa pamamagitan; bibigyan siya ng edukasyon para sa lahat sa 2015. Sa 2015 ang Pilipinas dapat ay tayahin ang krisis ng edukasyon; paanong bigyan ng mga Filipino nang kanilang karapatan upang tumanggap ng libreng pag-aaral mula sa preschool hanggang grado ng labing-dalawa.
Mahirap ito, ang katotohanan ay ngayon ay eleksyon taon at ang katawagan ng pagkapangulo sa Pilipinas ay anim na taon. Nag-alinlangan si Cruz sa abilidad ng Pilipinas upang dumating ng layunin sa susunod na katawagan ng pagkapangulo. Ang agos na krisis ng edukasyon, lahat ng mga kandidato may ibang posisyon tungkol sa pabutihin ng edukasyon. Naniniwala si Teodoro na ang pagpapaulit-ulit ng edukasyon dapat damihan sa 17 na taon at dapat primarya ang wika ng instruksyon sa Ingles. Naniniwala si Estrada na ang pagpapaulit-ulit ng edukasyon dapat 14 na taon at dapat primarya ang wika ng instruksyon sa Filipino. Naniniwala si Villar din na ang pagpapaulit-ulit ng edukasyon dapat 14 na taon, pero naniniwala siya na ang primarya na wika ng instruksyon dapat Ingles. Naniniwala si Aquino na ang pagpapaulit-ulit ng edukasyon dapat damihan sa 16 na taon at dapat primarya ang wika ng instruksyon sa mother tounge-based multi-lingual instruction.
Puwede mong makikita na ang lahat ng kandidato ay hati hati sa sariling paniniwala tungkol sa paanong dapat gawin upang pagbutihin ng edukasyon. Ang hamon sa edukasyon para sa susunod na pangulo ay: mababang pakikilahok, pagkabigo ng internasyonal na pagsusulit, lumang pilosopiya ng pagtuturo, kamangmangan sa kutura at agham, at gumamit ang eskuwela parang negosyo.
Ngayon na ang responsibilidad ni Aquino para ayosin ng sistema ng edukasyon sa Pilipinas.

About the speaker: Isagani R. Cruz was the former secretary of education of the Philippines in 2001.
The Philippines currently has the shortest education cycle in the world at 14-15 years. Around 15.2% of the nation’s budget goes toward education. Most of the money allotted to education goes towards paying the teacher’s salary. Since this is the case: 55% of schools in the Philippines have no electricity, 84% have no running water, 62% have no toilets, 25% have no ceilings, and 43% have no chairs.
The Philippines have several different departments of education that are autonomous from one another. The Department of Social Welfare and Development deals with preschool. The Department of Education deals with first through twelfth grade. The Department of Science and Technology handles science. This department also gets the most amount of funding. The Cultural Center of the Philippines is dedicated to art. So even within the realm of education there are still a lot of divisions regarding the distribution of resources.
Birthed from those problems is the sad reality that the majority of degrees from accredited universities in the Philippines are rejected overseas. Philippine engineering degrees are only accepted in the Philippines. The engineering accreditation in the Philippines does not meet the Washington Accord standards and the Asian Pacific Economic Cooperation Engineer standards. The Washington Accord is the international recognition for Engineering degrees of the proper tertiary requirement of four years.
Because of these problems educated Filipinos usually emigrate from the country. The remittances sent back from these Filipinos overseas play a vital role in Philippine economy. Rather than focus on keeping the educated people in the country so that change can come the Philippines is finding the most efficient way to export their educated labor force. In the Philippines, a system has been set up in which it is more profitable for the educated potential leaders of the society to emigrate away from their homeland.
The UN has proposed an initiative trying to reform education by providing education for all by 2015. By 2015 the Philippines is supposed to figure out how to fix the current education crisis to allow Filipinos the right to receive free education from preschool to college.
This is going to be hard considering the fact that it is an election year and the presidential term in the Philippines is 6 years. Cruz seriously doubts that the Philippines will be able to meet this deadline within the next Presidential term. The current education crisis can only be highlighted because of the fact that all candidates have very different stances on what they believe should be done to reform education. Teodoro believes that the education cycle should be increased to 17 years and the main language of instruction should be English. Estrada believes that the education cycle should remain at 14 years and the primary language of instruction should be Filipino. Villar also believes that the education cycle should remain at 14 years, however he believes that the main language of instruction should be English. Aquino believes that the education cycle should be extended to 16 years and that the language of instruction should be the mother tounge-based multilingual instruction.
As you can see the candidates are all divided on what they believe should happen to reform education. The challenges in education for the next presidency also include: low participation rate, failure in international tests, outdated teaching philosophies, cultural and scientific illiteracy, and mismatch between education and business.
Now it is the responsibility of Aquino to fix the education system in the Philippines.
